Campus, Campus News, Feature March 30, 2026, 0 CommentDrury University’s spring athletics are in full motion. An athlete worth highlighting is Senior, Delaney Riekert from Pretoria, South Africa.
Riekert came into the 2026 track season ready to compete. At the open of the indoor track and field season, Riekert broke the school record in the Women’s 400-meter race with a speed of 58.50 seconds at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic. Not long after, she broke the record again at the Bearcat Invite hosted in Maryville, MO, establishing a school record of 57.14 seconds and placing 3rd for the event in the meet.
Riekert told The Mirror, “I was really excited when I broke the record. It reassured that my hard work will pay off; however, I know I can run faster.” Training didn’t stop there as Riekert continued to lead her teammates, striving toward new goals.
Leadership remains an important feature of Riekert’s role in the current track season. “As a senior, I try to set an example and help my teammates to improve. I have learned a lot from older teammates [in the past]; therefore, I want to pass on my knowledge to younger athletes,” Riekert said, voicing the importance of guiding the younger athletes on the team.
Further, motivation and consistency have been key in Riekert’s development throughout her track journey. She shared advice for those striving towards reaching their goals, “Always give it your all. Even if you feel like you are not as good as the others. It is important to never give up”.

Along her journey of success, Riekert voiced that the challenge of being away from her family has been difficult; however, she is “grateful to have a track family” as her support system throughout this season.
She emphasized that, “it is important for athletes to remind themselves of the sacrifices they have made.” Through any moments of turbulence and success, athletes can find value in the hard work and effort put forth. “It’s not always easy, but I will always love track,” says Riekert.
Delaney Riekert stands out, not only as a competitor on the track, but as an example of how investing in what you love can lead to the discovery of joy and friendship. “Track has given me a lot of opportunities, and I have met multiple people [who] will always have a huge impact on my life”.
