BUIC’s “Roots and Remedies” returns with inspiration and education
Campus News October 29, 2025, Comments OffFor many, learning to properly care for natural hair is a journey that requires experimentation, years of practice, and, most importantly, patience. From navigating a wide variety of products to discovering stylish but protective styles, the process can often feel tedious and overwhelming. Yet for countless individuals, embracing their natural hair is considered a means of reclaiming their identity, culture, and boosting their confidence. Thankfully, this is not a journey that must be undertaken alone.

On October 9th, 2025, Drury’s Black United Independent Collegiate (BUIC), hosted its annual Roots and Remedies seminar, an event designed to provide individuals with knowledge on how to care for their natural hair as well as empower them to take pride in it. The gathering was well attended, drawing a crowd from Drury’s population as well as individuals from other colleges in the surrounding Springfield area. All attendees were eager to learn and “celebrate their roots”.
The event’s speaker, Dorah Sturhann, BUIC’s vice president, led the program with ease and expertise. Her detailed, interactive session covered how to identify one’s hair type via an online quiz, choosing products to suit various needs, and understanding the effects of heat and other popular styling methods. The presentation was notably very hands on, one highlight being a hair porosity test that was both insightful and thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees.

Sturhann also introduced the audience to the Yuka app. The app, she explained, allows you to scan hair products before purchase and receive a rating for how healthy or harmful they are for your hair as well as a breakdown of the high, medium, and low-risk ingredients they contain. This no doubt opened up new possibilities for mindful shopping and healthier hair choices in the lives of the audience members. To close the event, attendees also had the chance to participate in a raffle giveaway. This particular giveaway featured four individual baskets of hair products specifically curated for each of the hair types, one to four, with products of up to $100. Excitement filled the room as names were drawn and winners celebrated.

One such raffle winner, Nyheeta Milan, said while expressing her gratitude, “I’m so happy that I won. I’ve been trying to find good products for my hair type. Thank you BUIC for educating me on good ways to take care of my hair.”
The 2025 Roots and Remedies event was a resounding success that served as a celebration of all hair types and inspired confidence amongst all who attended. BUIC has once again demonstrated its commitment to uplifting the Drury community and beyond.
