A Drury student’s opinion on the Astroworld Tragedy
Editorial November 18, 2021, Comments Off 63A few weeks ago, Travis Scott hosted his music festival, and it was a complete tragedy. As of now there are eleven recorded deaths, and several more people have been injured. Many people who attended the concert report having nightmares about that night, and many people claim that there was a demonic energy in the air. There are several videos of the crowed that night, they show an overcrowded pit and people passing out one after another. Many people wonder how this could have happened, but there are only a few people we can blame, Travis Scott and his team.
I personally think he needs to be held accountable for this, there are multiple videos of fans begging him to stop the show. There is even a video of a girl who climbed on to the back of the stage and begged security to stop the show. She was shouting about how people were dying and was ignored. Several people said that they knew if they passed out, they would be trampled to death. Fans have reported that the whole day things were sketchy, and that security had to know there were way too many people there.
There’s a lot of people trying to defend Travis saying that he couldn’t have noticed, and that he didn’t know people wanted him to stop the show. I think that’s completely ridiculous , there is absolutely no way he didn’t see the emergency vehicles arrive. There’s also a ton of videos of him watching the crowd as someone passes out, and he just continues preforming. There is even a point in his show where he asks “do you guys want me to stop?” and then just continues his set.
Travis Scott has stopped other performances for less, one time someone grabbed his shoe, and he threw a fit and stopped the show. Many other artists have seen and have attended to fans who have passed out or have been in dangerous situations. There are videos of Twenty One Pilots, Kurt Cobain, Harry Styles and more artist stopping shows to make sure people don’t get injured, or to get them to safety. In those cases, its usually just one person, one single person in a huge crowd.
Travis’s response to this whole situation was less than adequate, many people have agreed that it feels like he doesn’t care, and that he only put out the video protect himself from backlash. Twitter has been dragging him through the mud for it, making parodies of the video and editing it. His team attempted to excuse the whole situation by saying that he didn’t see anything, and he couldn’t have known, but deleted the post after receiving tons of backlash for the masses.
There is absolutely no excuse for what happened that night at the festival, so many young lives were lost. Some of them could have been saved if he would stopped the concert or if he would have put in more effort to make the festival as safe as he can.
