Drury University’s Honors Program encompasses a group of hardworking individuals who have researched various topics throughout their undergraduate career. Honors students will present their research at the Honors Symposium on April 30 from 1-5 p.m. at Findlay Student Center (FSC) in room 204.

Dr. Richard Schur, director of the Honors Program, is excited about this opportunity for honors students.

“We want to create a space where honors students can share their excitement about the research they have been doing in their classes,” said Schur.

Honors students have been working hard on their research in a variety of areas and are excited to present their findings.

“Students will be presenting on the music of the 1960s, the effectiveness of Doctors Without Borders, American influence on Filipino food culture, the effects of Twinkies on our health, and contemporary women architects. Students have read scholarly articles, examined paintings and architectural designs, coded software, wrote reading curricula, and analyzed data,” explained Schur.

Honors student Alyssa Everett is enthusiastic about the opportunity the Honors Symposium presents. She explains what it takes to be an honors student.

“We pay extra attention to detail in our honors classes, and we dedicate a significant amount of time to tailored research projects, some of which will be presented at the Honors Symposium,” said Everett.

The symposium allows students to share research that would otherwise go unseen as well as expose themselves to new ideas through the work of their peers. Honors student Meagan Carmack explains what this event can mean for those attending.

“It is an opportunity for students and faculty who would otherwise not get to see these projects to see them. The liberal arts experience is about interdisciplinary sharing of ideas and passions, which is what this symposium does,” explained Carmack.

Each honors student will present their research question, what they discovered, and the implications of their findings. The Honors Symposium is a fun way for students to go beyond their own fields of study and explore how their peers have taken their education to the next level.

Seniors will present their research after the symposium at the Honors Banquet from 5-7 p.m. in the FSC ballroom. All are welcome to come to the event and learn about the projects their peers have now completed.
