Are you looking for a way to spice up your Halloween plans? Do you speak French? Alternatively, are the only French phrases you know “oui” or “Celine Dion?” If you answered yes to any of these questions and you like murder mysteries, the “Stiffen Very Carefully: Murder Mystery Party” is for you. This event organized by Drury’s French Club will be at the Humanities House on Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to RSVP beforehand on their Facebook page.

One mysterious night…

The mystery is set in occupied France during World War II. The night begins with a murder, as all good parties do. The body of a Resistance pilot is found, and it is the responsibility of the characters to find the murderer in their midst. Each participant is assigned an identity with the goal of discovering which of their characters committed the crime.

The 12 suspects available are described on the French Club’s Facebook page. For example, you could masquerade as Ethel Tartine, who is described on the site as, “Bonne viveuse, vivacious and flirty. A former cabaret singer, Ethel likes to entertain the guests in the cafe, but her efforts are not appreciated.” Other characters include Herr Frick, a Gestapo officer, Helga Suspender, a German secretary and more.

Get in character

Madame Blunk, the faculty adviser of the French Club, is excited to be a part of this event.

When asked about the murderous gathering, Blunk said, “It is one of the main events the French Club puts on each year, along with the Cheese and Chocolate tasting.”

Blunk also mentioned that the club has “a certain number of characters that they can assign people, so you can reserve a place in advance to make sure you get a character. If they have too many [participants], people may be able to double up on the characters.”

The event Facebook page also stated that costumes will be provided, but players are free to bring their own. Snacks will be available.

If you are ready to get your French on and solve a murder, reserve a spot for you and your friends for the “Stiffen Very Carefully: Murder Mystery Party” on Oct. 27.
