Expression is a key pillar in how we connect to culture, and for students at Drury University, “step” is the latest artform to be spotlighted.

Stepping derives from centuries of African history, blending West and South African folk dancing and even contemporary African-American jazz. The dance style became popularized in the 1900’s on college campuses among historically Black panhellenic organizations, often employed as a medium to express pride. Amidst periods of racial discrimination and repression in higher education, step offered a creative outlet for culture to be both seen and heard.

On November 12th, Drury’s Black United Independent Collegiate (BUIC) hosted “Activism 101: Step Up” in the Findlay Student Center, creating a safe environment for students to engage with these cultural dances. Half of the proceeds from the event’s raffle were donated to Ujimi Language and Literacy, a local program that supports children’s literacy in Springfield.

Following an educational presentation, students gathered to watch step performances by BUIC members and the Central High Step Team for an evening that promoted bridging gaps through understanding. Collegiate and secondary students of various backgrounds in Springfield were connected, and as Drury sophomore stepper, Dorah Sturhann, explained “events like these are essential to promoting cultural understanding and unity.”

Learning and designing BUIC’s routine, Sturhann had to balance the excitement of experimenting and the physical challenges of step. “[It was] frustrating to learn at first because my body was not coordinated at all, but my partners were wonderful in helping me with the moves step-by-step,” she said. The routine meant more, however, as it was a moment of cultural exploration for Sturhann. “I found the Step Show to be a fantastic opportunity to connect with a part of my heritage I didn’t know existed.”

BUIC’s step show altogether represents the unique influence the organization has on promoting cultural connection and highlighting Black expression. Through educational events like this, BUIC continues to break barriers and build bridges one step at a time.
