Backlash surrounding Euphoria’s second season
Editorial February 14, 2022, Comments Off 100As many people are probably already aware, HBO has been releasing episodes from the second season of its hit show Euphoria. There have been a lot of mixed feelings about the new season. While people are excited for the episodes to come out each week, the show has recently been under fire for inconsistent writing and for the excessive amount of nudity that has been in this season.
The show’s main writer Sam Levinson has recently been under fire by fans because there have been lots of holes and neglected storylines in the plot this season. Fans feel like there have been entire parts of the story that have been missing or that have just been left unresolved. One example that comes to mind is Kat’s storyline with camming and her boyfriend. It was mentioned once in the second (or first) episode and has only been briefly mentioned a few times in the last few episodes that have been released.
Though Euphoria has never been shy when it has come to nudity of both men and women, many fans have begun to notice how there are scenes with nudity in them where it is not particularly necessary. Fans have also noticed that it is with specific actresses, and many believe that it is due to only those certain people saying that they are okay with showing those parts of their body. The reason for this recent concern is due to some interviews some of the girls from the show have done stating that they had to step in and say that they did not think the scenes they were doing would be any better if there was nudity involved.
Another thing fans have been confused about and upset with is the direction that Jules and Rue’s relationship is going in. Many viewers believed that they were being set up to be a lesbian couple for this season because of the character development Jules went through towards the end of the last season, and because Rue seemed disinterested in men in general. However, this season they were sort of put into a love triangle with a new character named Elliot and a lot of people are upset about this. There is just a lot of confusion about their relationship and the sexualities that fans thought were established. Some people are calling it lesbian erasure, and others are saying that if the creators confirm that Jules is bisexual then they are perpetuating harmful bisexual stereotypes.
Season two has not been super well received by the fans so far, and many viewers are wondering if the writing of this season is going to cost the show future seasons or any sort of longevity. Though there has been lots of negative feedback, the season isn’t over and there is a chance for everything to improve or start to make more sense once fans have the big picture. There have been some positives as well, and even though it has been rough, fans are still super excited to tune in every Sunday to watch the show.
