A Drury Student’s review of The Legend of Vox Machina

The Legend of Vox Machina started out as a bunch of nerdy voice actors sitting around a table playing Dungeons and Dragons (DND).  But it has certainly exceeded more than just that. This has become bigger than any of the people involved with the show even imagined.

Critical Role is a group of professional voice actors that play DND and The Legend of Vox Machina was their first campaign and is what started their rise to success. They were crucial to the revival and popularization of DND. You do not even have to be someone who plays DND to enjoy it, you just need to have a good imagination since it is just them performing through words, or otherwise roleplaying.

Now they are getting their own animated series one Amazon Prime Video. All of season one has not even been released and there is already confirmation on a second season. And all of this would not be possible without their dedicated fan base raising millions of dollars so they can see their favorite classic characters given new life and story. It is like seeing an old friend.

To summarize my thoughts on the show, which when I am writing this only has three episodes released, it is absolutely amazing. The art style is beautiful, it is very professional and a lot of time and details have been put into the series. There are a bunch of Easter eggs and references hidden throughout the show to give Critical Role fans something to find.

The voice acting, well, all the people who played their own characters are voiced by who played them. Since they all have history in acting and professional voice acting, there was no need to hire anyone to fill their roles.

However, you should see the line up they have in their cast. They got David Tennant, you know, that guy from Doctor Who and Good Omens. Yeah, they got him. Any Avatar: The Last Airbender fans? Well they got Grey DeLisle, the voice actress of Azula, to play one of the main female antagonists. They have so much talent on this show it blows my mind when I can hear someone I recognize.

When my friend and I watched the first three episodes together. We both really enjoyed it, her being a fan of Critical Role much longer than me.

Now, I think I need to mention that this is not a kids cartoon. This is a show for adults. This has many graphic scenes not suitable for children. So for us college kids and older adults, we get a show all to ourselves.

If you are someone who is looking for a new show to watch and do not mind trying something new, give this show a try. There are new episodes coming out every week. This is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but it could be yours. So if you are on Amazon Prime, go watch the show now. I promise it will be worth it.
