A Drury student’s personal review on Marvel’s ‘Eternals’
Editorial November 12, 2021, Comments Off 93The newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Eternals’ was released on November 5 and instantly impacted theaters across the nation in various ways.
Even though this film has been in theaters for a brief period, there are already numerous opinions surrounding this Marvel comic adaptation. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given a score of 50%, however, the audience score is at a solid 86%.
With the introduction of a completely new group of superheroes and a seemingly stylistic change to come with it, I was super elated heading into the film, eager to form my own opinion on this new addition to the MCU.
My personal opinion can be summarized in the statement, it was a good Marvel movie, by no means my favorite, but undeserving of the hate it is receiving by critics.
Visually, this film was one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. The effects and shots were stunning and well placed among an action and fast-paced film. The characters were each interesting in the screen time they received, and each of their powers were unique and unlike any seen in the Marvel Universe thus far.
However, one major complaint that I had as an audience viewer was the split-screen time/too many plot lines. With there being a large cast I felt as if there was not enough time to fully develop each of the characters. Then with the combination of a multitude of various plot lines, I felt as if this movie was crammed.
If the ‘Eternals’ could have been made into two, or even three films to explain the events that all happened in just the two hours originally, I believe all of the characters and twists and turns would have paid off more in the long run. The characters were great, the plot-lines and twists were interesting and the movie was compelling, however, trying to fit all three into an origin story movie was overwhelming in some aspects.
Although I had some criticism of the film, I do not agree with the amount of backlash other critics are casting on this Marvel movie. With statements being thrown out of it being “boring”, “stale” or even “the worst Marvel movie in history.” I was legitimately stunned. Do I believe it’s as high in my ranking as ‘Avenger’s Endgame’, no certainly not. But to throw around such harsh reviews to a movie that is trying to adjust the formulaic script of other Marvel movies. Which is a daunting task and extremely commendable for trying. Director Chloe Zhao and each member of the cast should be proud of their work of producing a Marvel movie unlike any other, not reprimanded for their effort.
Overall, I do highly recommend watching the movie ‘Eternals’ and ignoring other critics which are hating on an undeserving film. Even if you have seen any Marvel movie before, this film is a stand-alone and is possible to watch without having seen anything else. ‘Eternals’ is a fantastic movie in my opinion and should receive more positive feedback on its changing of the cinematic universe.
