The campus cat: Drury’s clarified policy on caring for stray animals

Drury’s mascot is the beloved Pouncer the Panther. However, a new feline has been the center of conversation around campus as of late. A wandering cat has been living among students in college park this year. Although it has many names, it is commonly known as the “campus cat.”

Kitty Caretakers

Several students have built small shelters for the cat and left food and water out nightly. The cat has received several names such as Vosotros, Milo and Flynn.

A source who wishes to remain anonymous due to campus policy and her roommates created an outdoor home and began feeding the cat. She shared why they began caring for the cat.

“It was very cold outside and the cat kept following us. We felt bad and named it. After that, there was no going back for us,” she said. “He was our Flynn.”

Policy

Recently, an email was sent out campus wide regarding animals like the beloved campus cat by Executive Director of Housing and Residential Programs, Holly Binder. The announcement clarified a strict policy regarding caring for outdoor animals.

“Additionally, caring for an ‘outside’ pet or stray animal is prohibited. A minimum $150 fine will automatically be charged to the resident’s account for allowing animals into a residence or feeding/watering an outside animal. Instead call a local rescue if you’re worried about an outdoor animal,” the email stated.

The email also addressed policy regarding emotional support animals, service animals and approved indoor pets.

Response

Several students were saddened by this finable offense regarding stray animals like the campus cat. However, there are incredible shelters and resources available for stray animals such as the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri.

Although students might not see as many “cat villas” alongside the sidewalks of college park these days, they might still catch a glimpse of the lone feline. Wherever Flynn/Milo/Vosotros is, residents hope he is doing well.
