Springfield’s art scene is booming as an increase in art galleries in the downtown area bring diversity to art. Drury’s own C-Street Gallery is a jumping point for the discussion of art in Springfield. Open Monday through Saturday, the C-Street gallery is home to a rotation of exhibits.

The current exhibit is GAME ON! The Art of Sports, which highlights the Super Bowl and artistic representations of sports. An upcoming event hosted by the Drury C-Street gallery is Recycling Retro on March 6 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. which includes recycled art, a thrift pop-up shop, and live music.

Beyond Drury, the Springfield Art Museum is currently showing various art collections related to the American identity. These include local and international artists.

A special collection being shown until March 8 features the artwork of Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist well known for his portrait work. Drury student Lauren Inman was drawn to the portraits of local photographer Randy Bacon in a special exhibit The Road I Call Home. Inman commented that the portraits were casual and complimented the individuals’ displayed in the Springfield Art Museum.

The Springfield Regional Art’s Councils Fresh Gallery provide the Springfield community with more engagement in the fine arts. The Fresh Gallery focuses on showing the art of local artists “who have been juried in [and] come from a wide variety of specialty backgrounds including painting, jewelry, fiber art, sculptures, pottery, mixed media, wood-working, stained glass, and photography,” according to the Fresh Gallery Website.

Among the local art scene is Hawthorne Galleries which promotes both national and international mixed-media art. Open Monday through Friday the Hawthorne Gallery highlights local artists including Tanja Ware, Juanita Herrell, and Dan McWilliams.

A way to peruse some of Springfield’s best downtown art galleries is the First Friday Art Walk which collaborates between over 20 different galleries to display works of art in Springfield. The next Art Walk is March 6th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Springfield. You can find more information on this event on the First Friday Art Walk Facebook page.
