Start-of-season recap

On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Drury baseball team kicked off their season with a series against East Central. The Panthers began the season with a split but came back with a 5-3 win in the final game to end the series.

The following weekend, the Panthers split a doubleheader with Winona State.

Fan support

Drury University currently does not have an on-campus stadium equipped for home games, but fan support is still extremely encouraged. The Panthers currently play at US Baseball Park in Ozark for home games.

“Our players love to have support. Playing in Ozark serves some challenges for them to come out, but if they would take the short 15-minute drive, it’s a great venue. Full concessions, free admissions for students, chair backseats, a video board, and a field that will never be rained out as we play on all field turf,” said head baseball coach, Scott Nasby.

When asked if having the support of Drury students and fans helps the energy level at games, sophomore and third baseman Stephen Randazzo replied, “No doubt about it. That’s the best part.”

“We would love to have students out especially as it warms up,” mentioned Nasby. “Take a trip out there and I guarantee they will enjoy the time and amenities of the park.”

Building excitement

Coaching staff, players, students and fans alike are all excited for the Panthers’ upcoming season. The Panthers have a lot of experienced players on the roster this year.

“I am most excited for the opportunity that 15 seniors get this year to finish up their baseball dreams, and have a great season,” stated Nasby. “Our goal is to host an NCAA regional and compete with the top teams in the country.”

When asked what he was most excited for, Randazzo responded, “I’m most excited to experience the success of my team and for the road trips we will be taking. It is always fun to get out and experience different parts of the country and check out other universities.”

The team recently flew out to Kaneohe, Hawaii, to play Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) in a much anticipated, three-day series.

“We [left] for Hawaii on February 19, and it [is] something the program is been looking forward to for the last 2 1/2 years,” said Nasby. “We get at least five games against HPU and our guys are pretty excited about it.”

Team spirit

When asked if he was close to his teammates, Randazzo replied jokingly, “Yes, a little too close at times. I have lived with baseball players both years I’ve attended Drury. We watch the Bachelor on Mondays and go out to dinner sometimes. Of course, we enjoy going to class and the library together as well.”

Be sure to stay tuned for upcoming games. Come out and show support for the Drury Panthers this season. The Drury University Baseball schedule is available at drurypanthers.com
