The decade in review
Front Page December 6, 2019, Comments Off 147The decade is coming to a close. In the spirit of hindsight, The Mirror takes a look at the chart-topping people and moments of the last 10 years.
Unexpected events
It’s been a weird, weird 10 years. This list is by no means all-encompassing and is not meant to identify the more comedic listings with the somber ones.
1. The 2016 election
From email scandals, DNC plots against Bernie Sanders, Ben Carson, Hillary’s hot sauce, and the eventual Trump victory despite polls across the nation, little about the 2016 primaries and election season seemed to make sense.
2. DOMA is repealed in 2013
June 26: The United States gets one step closer to marriage equality with the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.
3. The pop-punk/emo revival of 2019
Green Day and Blink-182 came out with new music. Panic! At the Disco reached new heights with their “Pray for the Wicked” tour, and My Chemical Romance came out of left field with their reunion announcement.
4. The non-pocalypse of 2012
The Mayan calendar ended, but ours did not. Has anything felt quite real since then, though?
5. The Greek tragedy of the rise and fall of Flappy Bird, 2013
This technically counts as a meme, but it’s hard to forget how quickly and completely this simple app consumed the Internet – and the horrific backlash its creator faced. After shutting down support for Flappy Bird due to death threats, devices that still had the app became sacred.
6. World peace is briefly achieved with the release of Pokemon Go, 2016
The app may have lost its steam, but in 2016 Pokemon Go shook humanity to its core in a positive way. People got out and wandered the streets to fulfill the dream of capturing the original 150 Pokemon of the Kanto region. Unfortunately, concerns about child predators forced the app to tighten its security, and accidents while driving prompted game safety changes as well. Pokemon Go now includes all Pokemon up to Generation V with special releases and promotions for its newer games.
7. The Ebola scare of 2014
On Aug. 8, WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in Guinea to be a matter of international concern. According to the Central for Disease Control (CDC) website, only 11 cases were treated in the United States.
8. Tragic celebrity deaths of 2016
David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Muhammad Ali, George Michael, Prince, Kenny Baker, Harper Lee and too many more.
9. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut with “Get Out,” 2017
Peele switched directions from the comedy of “Key and Peele” with “Get Out,” a critically acclaimed horror movie. Peele has gone on to create “Us” (2019) and direct the TV revival of “The Twilight Zone.” Articles from Vox and Vulture both acknowledge that his comedy and horror really aren’t too far apart; his work in both genres focuses on the gaps between reality and perception.

Subcultures
(Cited from MODA Chicago and Rebels Market)
1. Hipster
The kingpin of the 2010s was the rise of the hipster alongside folk music and indie rock. Scarves, man buns, beard oil, and flannels are definitive trademarks of a hipster, as are dark, muted colors, tasteful reading glasses with the lenses popped out, beanies and peacoats.
2. Vsco girls
Hydroflasks and friendship bracelets galore! Casual looks like oversized long-sleeved shirts and Birkenstocks mark the Vsco girl, a title that gets its name from a popular photo-editing app.
3. E-people
Band tees layered over striped long-sleeved shirts and brooding makeup correlates to the emo rebirth of 2019, but the two are not synonymous. E-fashion largely came out of TikTok.
4. Hypebeast
Supreme clothing. That is all.
5. Art hoe
The Renaissance of soft yellow sweaters, denim skirts, bangs, and Kanken backpacks.
6. Instagram baddie
Fashion Nova, MUA-level looks, manicured and elongated nails and the overall appearance of being very fashionably put-together are signatures of the Instagram baddie.
7. Soft grunge
A tribute to the 90s for the kids who really, really wish they had been old enough to experience the 90s. Ripped tights, torn jeans, faded t-shirts and beat-up Converse and Vans all give off the perfect vibe of not caring just enough while still making a statement.
8. Sneakerheads
Sports shoes came back in a big way this decade with a more casual – and collector – impact. Nike, Adidas, Puma and Filas pulled out the stops with their celebrity collaborations and have saturated the market with high-end limited-edition shoes.
9. Pastel goth/health goth/nu goth
Goth fashion always survives in one way or another. Black gave way to millennium pinks and soft violets in the Tumblr days of 2013, then adapted a style reminiscent of the sneakerheads in the health goth wave that had heavy Adidas influence. Nu goth takes its cue from witchy and occult looks.
10. Memecore
Take a meme, put it on a shirt. Or pants. Or a hat.
