Drury University has recently added the role of a diversity and inclusion officer, filled by Marilyn Harris, MS, SHRM-CP. The addition comes as part of an initiative to make Drury an inclusive environment.

What is a diversity and inclusion officer?

Harris’ roles will include working with Springfield community leaders and Drury’s own inclusion council, infusing diversity and inclusion throughout campus and providing her expertise on issues of access, equity, diversity and inclusion. Harris is excited to serve as a leader for Drury in aspects related to diversity and inclusion and is currently working on what the vision for Drury is.

“We’ll have a strategic plan for all phases and efforts of moving us forward on this issue. But one person cannot create this plan. It really has to be a collaborative effort and infused throughout all parts of the university,” explained Harris. “ Part of the process is my own research on best practices and listening to people across campus.”

While Harris has been appointed to promote these efforts, this is effort has been designed in a way to get people across campus involved.

“Diversity and inclusion are important values that we hold on this campus. But we can always do better. And however you define ‘doing better’ – it doesn’t just happen on its own. We have to have a plan to do better. In this role, I’ll help create and execute that plan – working with people across the campus,” said Harris.

How you can help

The appointment of a diversity and inclusion officer was to take action in an area that can always be improved. Students can also take part in promoting diversity and inclusion in their own experiences on campus.

“One thing students can do is support any existing efforts on campus to help raise the visibility of and support for various populations on campus – that includes attending events or participating in various recognition efforts,” explained Harris.

Harris values what students can do in helping her be successful in a new role at Drury. She is excited about what students can offer to the initiative and Drury.

“You should also speak up and let us know how and why you think diversity and inclusion are important for the college experience and for Drury. Everything we do here is related to student success, and I welcome your thoughts on how we move forward,” insisted Harris.

With the addition of a diversity and inclusion officer, Drury hopes to help facilitate the collaboration and conversation to make Drury more inclusive. Apart from serving as the diversity and inclusion officer, Harris will also play a key role in the President’s Council on Inclusion as chair working to make Drury University a better place.
