Pi Beta Phi presents Puttin’ on the Lips: The annual lip-syncing event for a cause
Campus News November 8, 2019, Comments Off 175Get ready to sing and dance your heart out. Drury’s own Pi Beta Phi is hosting their annual Puttin’ on the Lips (POL) on Monday, Nov. 11 in Clara Thompson Hall at 7 p.m. The cost of admission is $5 in advance and $7 at the door the night of the event.
What is the event?
Vice President of Philanthropy and main planner of POL on behalf of Pi Beta Phi, Victoria Monroe, explains that she is extremely excited for this year’s traditional yet unique event.
“POL is an annual lip-syncing/dance competition hosted by Pi Beta Phi. The event is open to all campus groups allowing them to support a great cause and promote their own organizations,” explains Monroe. “There will be raffles held at the event as well. The theme this year is “Rhinestone Cowgirls” which is just a play on Glen Campbell’s album. It’s not exclusive for women- it’s just a classic country/country chic theme.”
The history and reason behind the POL event is one that is near and dear to the hearts of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. This event is all about raising awareness and money for a good cause.
The importance of the event
“We have been hosting POL in honor of our late sister Andrea Newbold since 2001. She was a victim of a drunk driver hitting her and we still spread awareness at the event by having campus police come talk,” said Monroe. “Every penny raised at/for this event (team fees, tickets, raffle tickets, etc) is donated to Pi Beta Phi’s national philanthropy initiative Read>Lead>Achieve which supports children’s literacy on national and local levels. We were recently able to donate 500 books to the local school Fremont Elementary with the help of our national philanthropy.”
Everyone is encouraged to come out for a night of learning and laughs with the Drury community.
“We have had the honor of POL being the highest attended philanthropy event on campus since we began hosting it, so we are expecting the turnout to be pretty good! To me, POL is a tradition that the community comes together to celebrate life. Being able to remember Andrea and spread awareness about something that affects so many people in our lives in a light-hearted way is important and we have loved being able to bring everyone together,” said Monroe.
