Nationally known inspirational speaker comes to Drury
Campus News, Community September 20, 2019, Comments Off 55Wambui Bahati, a nationally known inspirational and motivational speaker, is set to speak Thursday, Sept. 26 in Clara Thompson Hall at 10 a.m. Bahati, a domestic violence survivor, will share her personal experience in a thought provoking and engaging manner.
A meaningful topic
Dr. Shannon Cuff, Dean of the School of Education and faculty contact for the event, is excited for what this event can offer to students and the community.
“While this is an open event, it’s important for college students because they need to understand how domestic violence not only affects the person who is abused but also the individuals who are part of that person’s life,” explained Dr. Cuff.
While domestic violence can be a heavy topic for discussion, this is an opportunity for students and community members to learn more about the realities survivors live with. It may also coincide with students’ studies.
“Wambui’s presentation will be meaningful for any student, but those who study psychology, criminology and education may be particularly interested in how domestic violence affects the individual as well as their family,” Dr. Cuff expressed.
An informational experience
The event is meant to be informational, but also tells Bahati’s personal story and how she was able to overcome her struggles.
“Wambui will share her personal experience and will also explain how she continues to reinvent herself after surviving trauma,” said Dr. Cuff.
Bahati will share information vital to understanding the human experience for some individuals. This is intended to be a learning experience. Dr. Cuff is excited about what the event has to offer to students.
“Students should attend to learn more about the impact domestic violence has on our community,” continued Dr. Cuff. “They may know (or will know) someone who has experienced domestic violence, and Wambui’s presentation will help students deepen their knowledge and understanding of this important issue.”
This event is brought to Drury University by GigSalad and Harmony House. It is open to the public as well as Drury students. Be sure to stop by Clara Thompson Hall on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for Bahati’s informational discussion.
