In just 12 pages, an anonymous sexual assault victim shared what happened to her on the early morning of Jan. 18, 2015. The strength of her words turned into a widespread movement of speaking out against sexual violence. “Emily Doe” was the name given to the victim who was sexually assaulted by the Stanford student, Brock Turner. On Tuesday, Sept. 4, “Emily Doe” revealed her identity. Her name is Chanel Miller, and she is not just a victim; she is a survivor.

Buzzfeed News first released Chanel Miller’s statement. She stood up in court in front of her attacker and shared everything that she remembered from the night that was supposed to be harmless fun at a party with her sister. Miller directed her statement at Turner directly, and her words left an impact:

“You don’t know me, but you’ve been inside me, and that’s why we’re here today.”

Miller talked about the overwhelming sense of confusion. She did not remember the attack but does remember waking up in a hospital covered in dried blood. The scariest moment was feeling nothing below her waist. She did not recognize her own body. It took time to come to terms with what had happened to her, but Miller does not regret ever being where she was that night. She knows that if it had not happened to her, it would have been another woman who had let her guard down. Her statement ended by addressing the girls like her:

“To girls everywhere, I am with you. On nights when you feel alone, I am with you. When people doubt you or dismiss you, I am with you. I fought every day for you. So never stop fighting, I believe you.”

Despite what happened to her, Chanel Miller is still the smart 23-year-old Stanford graduate. She is still a loving daughter and sister to a very supporting family. She is still a passionate writer, but now she is using her experience and her passion to support the individuals who have gone through or know someone who has gone through what she did that night.

To learn more about Chanel Miller’s story, you can pre-order her memoir “Know My Name” from PenguinRandomHouse.com. Chanel Miller will also be featured on the show “60 Minutes” two days before the release of her memoir on Sept. 24.
