Join the cause at the Me Too rally
Weekend September 13, 2019, Comments Off 158Anyone and everyone is invited to come downtown to Park Central Square on Sept. 14 for the 2019 Springfield Me Too Rally.
The Me Too Rally is an extension of the Me Too Movement. Over ten years ago, activist Tarana Burke started the hashtag #MeToo to bring attention to the issue of sexual assault against women in the African American community.
Then, in October 2016, the hashtag went viral following the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein. The hashtag brought attention to the widespread issue of sexual assault and harassment all over the world. Since then, founder Tarana Burke has said that the hashtag now stands for all, whether the victims are male, female, straight, LGBTQ, white, or people of color.
Jordan Harris, co-founder and president of Me Too Springfield, is very excited for the rally and to witness many individuals being brought together because of one cause. This event was created to display the whole purpose of the movement- to know that you are not alone.
“The other co-founder, Kelsey Nichol, and I felt that survivors of the Springfield area were lacking not only knowledge of the resources that are available, but also a community of fellow survivors who understand what they are going through. We understand how isolating going through sexual trauma can be, so we wanted to provide a space where survivors could come to hear about local resources, relax, share, and heal around caring individuals,” said Harris.
The rally itself can lead to an array of emotions but ultimately it leaves attendees feeling empowered. The event is completely free to attend. There will be somber moments and conversations, but there will also be fun music, a kid’s area, and amazing drag performances.
“The 2019 Me Too Springfield Rally is a lot of things put together. It’s a protest, a celebration of strength, a community gathering, a festival of local businesses, and an educational event to teach about local nonprofits and the prevalence of sexual assault in our community,” said Harris.
Me Too Springfield also provides Sharing Spaces that anyone is welcome to attend! This is an opportunity to either share your story in a safe, supporting environment, or just come and listen. They also offer consent classes for businesses and organizations which can be booked on their website.
