D. Cycle the bike shop: An environmental option for getting around on campus
Campus News September 13, 2019, Comments Off 118D. Cycle is Drury’s new on-campus bike shop giving students access to an alternative method for traveling throughout the grounds.
Getting things rolling
Around a decade ago, Drury decided to begin focusing on increasing the effort to become a more environmentally aware campus. One of the efforts by Drury was creating a bicycle shop in which it rented out bikes to students, known as D. Cycle.
“D.Cycle, is aimed to provide alternative ways for students, staff and faculty as well, to get around campus,” third year architecture student, Peter Monroe explained.
As D. Cycle’s student director, Monroe manages the books for the shop and helps with repairs.
“I got involved when I was looking for an on-campus job. I manage the books meaning to keep track of which bikes are rented and who has rented them and for how long,” Monroe said.
Bike rentals are available to full-time students on a semester- or year-long basis for a small fee. In addition to renting out bicycles to students and faculty, the shop also provides basic repair services on rental and personal bikes for free.
Monroe stated, “I also help with all the bike maintenance. I enjoy being able to help people when they have an issue with their bike.”
The Gear Closet
When Drury began taking the steps to develop options for being more environmentally concious, D. Cycle and also the Gear Closet was founded.
“D.Cycle/Gear Closet was part of the University’s effort to be more green in its nature…and provide a service to the Drury students,” Monroe explained. “The goal with the Gear Closet is providing equipment for Drury students to go camping, hiking and other outside leisure activities.”
D. Cycle and the Gear Closet are both a part of Drury’s overall campus-wide endeavor to be a cleaner, more environmentally responsible community. They are located in the lower level of the Findlay Student Center; which can be accessed from the north side of the building, directly across from Smith Hall.
Both are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and Monday through Thursday 5:30-6:30 p.m. You can also find more information on their website at https://www.drury.edu/campus-recreation/dcycle-rental-program-information
