Greek Week turned Greek Sing
Campus News, News April 12, 2019, Comments Off 86Greek Week is a huge and exciting event for anyone involved in a fraternity or sorority. It is a period of time all members of Greek life to come together and make a difference both within their chapters and within their community. This year, however, Greek Week is undergoing some changes.
Changing it up
“So this semester instead of a Greek Week we are doing a new event called a Greek Sing. It will be on Thursday, April 25 at 8 p.m. in Clara Thompson. Chapters will be paired one sorority with one fraternity, and they will sing and dance to a series of songs,” explained Caroline Conrad, member of Zeta Tau Alpha.
The 2019 pairings will be:
- Delta Delta Delta with Sigma Nu
- Kappa Delta with Kappa Alpha
- Pi Beta Phi with Sigma Pi
- Zeta Tau Alpha with Lambda Chi Alpha
Conrad is Director of Activities within her sorority, and Vice President of Events for the Panhellenic Council.
The change was originally made in order to avoid scheduling conflicts in the fall, but ultimately became a way to pave the road for an all-new annual Greek event.
“In the past, Greek Week has always been in the fall,” explained Conrad. “Last year, we tried to transition it to the spring to encourage more fellowship between chapters towards the end of the year and going into summer, and also to avoid conflicts with chapter initiations and other fall events.”
Networking and establishing connections is a large part of why many students choose to go Greek, so the more events, the better.
“However, we decided that fall Greek Week was just as important, for it is a really good way for new chapter members to meet other people in Greek Life, grow closer with their chapters, and accommodate themselves to their environment,” continued Conrad. “As a result, we are hosting one big event this semester in an effort to establish it as a regular spring semester event that still encourages the fellowship of chapters and the Greek community as a whole in the same way that a Greek Week would.”
Reaching out to the community
Sophomore Jaxon Adams is second year member of Sigma Pi, and currently holds the positions of Vice President of Community Outreach and Mental Health founder and chair of the fraternity. Through these positions, he has been greatly involved in planning Greek Sing, as well as the philanthropic event.
“We have a community service project as a whole,” explained Adams. “We’re teaming up with the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks to help clean up Lake Springfield, picking up trash around the trails.”
Greek Sing will have a competitive element that will encourage teams to give their absolute best performance at the event.
“We’re planning on giving percentages of the money raised to teams [competing in Greek Sing] to give to their philanthropies,” explained Adams. “You can buy tickets to the event the week of Greek Sing. They will be $3 for a ticket, or $5 for two.”
Greek Sing will be a great opportunity for students to root for their favorite sorority or fraternity, laugh with friends and support countless philanthropies, too! Come by Clara Thompson Hall on April 25 at 8 p.m. for a reinvented Greek event.
