Honors Comedy Showcase brings lighthearted fun to campus
Campus News, News April 5, 2019, Comments Off 75For the past couple of years, the Honors 205 comedy class, mandatory for honors students, has hosted a comedy showcase at the conclusion of the course. This spring, in lieu of that class, four Drury students have stepped up to put the event together again.
Jeana Scott, Forest Swisher, Maclen Johnson and Esther George answered the Dr. Schur’s call to lead the event. Dr. Schur is the director of the honors program. Together, they have organized this year’s iteration of the comedy night, which is now a fundraiser for the honors program.
The event will consist of a series of skits, standup and improv performed by Drury students and faculty.
According to George, the team decided to schedule the showcase close to the end of the year to offer a break from finals time.
“The whole goal of the night is to just be a super fun stress reliever,” said George.
George is excited to offer an on-campus opportunity for Drury students to showcase their comedy chops, or just sit back and have a laugh.
The evening will be hosted by Swisher and George, a hilarious duo. In between acts, the hosts will bring audience members on stage to play improv games. As George and Swisher are both members of Drury’s improv troupe, they will offer the audience an opportunity to participate in the fun.
It is not too late to participate in the event! Submitting an act (which should be around five minutes long) costs $5 per person or team. The event coordinators are still seeking six more acts.
Anyone who has a talent for humor and is looking for an opportunity to express it should contact any of those in charge for more information. Send an email to jscott014@drury.edu, fswisher002@drury.edu, mjohnson024@drury.edu or egeorge@drury.edu.
The event will be on April 7 at 7 p.m. and will be about an hour and a half long. Entry for audience members is $2, which goes toward supporting Drury’s honors program. Tickets are only available for purchase at the door. In addition to entry, the $2 also gets you two votes for your favorite act of the night. At the end of the night, awards will be given out to the acts with the most votes.
So, anybody with a “funny bone” should be sure to make it to the Sunderland Black Box Theater on April 17. It is sure to be an enjoyable night.
