Get Dusted to host its three year “Dragversary”
Weekend January 25, 2019, Comments Off 144Drag shows have become a popular form of entertainment and are getting their footing right here in Springfield, Mo. At the heart of the drag scene is Get Dusted, a show scheduled to celebrate its third year this month. This special “dragversary” show will be hosted on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Outland Ballroom.
What is Get Dusted?
Get Dusted is a drag show hosted by Crystal Methyd on the last Saturday of the month at the Outland Ballroom.
“It’s for all ages, even parents can take their kiddos to show them different art forms,” explained Drury student, Jessi Cook.
A major goal of Get Dusted is to reach a larger audience as they advertise “invite your moms,” in its effort to reveal drag culture to those who are unfamiliar.
How does drag contribute to the community?
Get Dusted has instigated the recent outpouring of drag in Springfield.
“I feel like Springfield drag has only increased in quality since Crystal Methyd started Get Dusted,” said Drury alumna, Makayla Jordan-Diemler.
Since Get Dusted got its start, it has paved the way for a new era of queens. As popularity has increased, it has allowed the city to present a unique art form.
“Springfield’s drag scene is strong, considering Springfield is in the Bible Belt,” said Cook.
Drag has allowed Springfield to show openness in the community and explore an unconventional art form. The unique art form provides a route of expression for the queens.
“I really love drag because it is just a form of artistic expression. From the makeup to lip syncs it’s all just art,” said Cook.
What can students expect from the show?
Drag shows are vibrant, high-spirited affairs, where queens typically dance and lip sync while wearing magnificent costumes. For the audience of Get Dusted, it is an opportunity for people of all ages to see drag in a safe, inclusive and thrilling environment.
“Get Dusted can be a lot if it is your first time around drag, but at the same time, I think it is a good opener as well if you’re new to the concept of drag,” said Cook.
Preceding the show, musical guest Blue False Indigo will be performing, only heightening the experience for Drury students.
“I have very high expectations, especially because my favorite band of Drury alums, Blue False Indigo, will be performing,” said Drury student Anissa Wiant.
A big part of drag is the energy of the audience, as the queens thrive on the audience’s attention to make the show. Students can show their support by attending. Doors open at 9 p.m. Musical guest Blue False Indigo performs at 10:30 p.m. and the show starts at 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
