Pizza and Politics: Get well-informed and well-fed

Pizza and Politics was created by Dr. Leinaweaver and Dr. Ted Vaggalis in 2012. It has strived since then to create a loosely structured and inclusive space for students to discuss politics and become more informed, over some free pizza. Currently, the event is sponsored by the Meador Center for Politics and Citizenship. Attending these meetings is a great way for students to stay informed about politics.

What is it?

Regarding the mission of the organization, Dr. Leinaweaver stated, “My goal is to create a casual, and at times, somewhat silly atmosphere where we can chat about current events and explore what we know about the world. All you need is the free time to join us and a desire to talk about the world we live in. Being a fan of free pizza and soda helps, too!”

The group is not just an organization meant for political science majors. The main focus is to make sure that all majors feel welcome. One way that Dr. Leinaweaver has done this in the past is by holding the event in various locations across campus. He also includes co-hosts from other departments.

“Currently on the schedule for the Spring we have co-hosts from the Education Department, Middle East Studies and the Humanities and Ethics Center,” stated Dr. Leinaweaver. “Our conversations are way more fun when we get a diverse mix of participants.”

Pizza and Politics meetings this semester have included topics such as “Pizza, Politics, and Pot: Should Missouri Vote to Legalize Medical Marijuana?” and “Pizza Politics and [Political] Parties.”

Getting ready for next semester

Pizza and Politics for this semester has concluded with the final meeting on Nov. 7 that went over the midterm election results. But it is never too early to start making room in your schedule for the meetings next semester. They will be held on Jan. 23, Feb. 6, Feb. 20, March 20, April 3, and April 17.

If you are interested in receiving bi-weekly reminders of the dates that Pizza and Politics will take place, you can send Dr. Leinaweaver an e-mail at jleinaweaver@drury.edu to join an email list or keep an eye on the events on Drury’s calendar, D.CAL.

In a time where it is sometimes difficult to determine the authenticity of sources about your news and politics, Pizza and Politics is an easy way for students to stay informed and get some free food.
