Bob Barker is certainly one of Drury University’s coolest alumni, but he’s far from the only one. Drury has produced Fulbright scholars, state representatives, actors… and a band.

Meet the band

Blue False Indigo is comprised of Makayla Scott, Kara LePage and A.J. Villar. Now based in Kansas City, Mo., the trio met at Drury in the fall of 2013. They describe their unique style as spooky folk; the voices of the women are the main instruments while they are accompanied by tambourines and an acoustic guitar or, for some performances, a full band.

“We really had no idea what we were getting into or where it would go,” Makayla Scott disclosed. Scott is the guitarist for the group and penned the band’s first songs.

“I never wrote with any particular genre in mind but played to the strength of having three voices and have always played an acoustic. Those two alone elements stylize us in a way,” she explained.

The celebration of a milestone

The band celebrated their five-year anniversary on Oct. 27, 2018 with a secret concert in Kansas the same week. Villar and Scott teased the audience that it was their send-off show; a statement that alarmed some in the audience before realizing it was a joke.

The trio played an assortment of new and old songs that included a cover of Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” and their original song “After the Flood.” The setlist was fueled by audience requests, many of whom had been listening to the band since they knew them in college.

“It’s been fun to look back with some of our friends who have been following us since the beginning because they really know us!” Scott exclaimed.

“So much has changed in the last five years and for the better,” continued Scott. “We recorded an album. We moved away to pursue music. These are things I wished for but never knew whether or not they’d happen when we got started.”

“We have gained and lost, had stellar shows and exhausting shows and technical difficulties and encores and all kinds of unpredictable and beautiful things happen to us,” stated Scott.

Blue False Indigo is slated to perform Nov. 10 at Myers Hotel Bar in Tonganoxie, Ks. Their song, “More Light,” is available for streaming on Spotify and Soundcloud.
