Zeta Tau Alpha to host Queso for a Cure in support of breast cancer
Campus News, Community October 12, 2018, Comments Off 430Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) is hosting Queso for a Cure on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Findlay Student Center Ballroom to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Food for a cause
Kayle Welch, director of philanthropy for Zeta Tau Alpha, stated that she is extremely excited to be planning Queso for a Cure and coordinating all efforts to make this event as successful as it has been in previous years.
“Queso for a Cure was created as a fun way to get people involved in supporting breast cancer education and awareness. In ZTA, we always try to think of the best ways to spread awareness, educate those around us, and generate funds for groundbreaking research in exciting ways,” said Welch. “Queso for a Cure is always great because it is centered around something everyone loves – cheese. It is an event that people love participating in.”
Jayne Roller, a senior Zeta Tau Alpha member, is also looking forward to hosting this event for the fourth year in a row, especially since it consists of a little bit of friendly competition.
“Queso for a Cure is one of our largest philanthropy events; it is always held in October as our event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is essentially a chili cook-off but for queso. Teams sign up to make their favorite queso recipe and compete for the title of “Best Queso in Springfield.” They will receive an official plaque as a reward. Since it is on Halloween this year, we are also incorporating a costume competition,” said Roller.
The event is open to the public and anyone is able to create a team to compete for the title.
“This event is great for anyone who wants to support a great cause and get a little more involved in their community. It is always a really fun event with a big campus turn out. And this year, it will be a great appetizer before feasting on some Halloween candy,” said Roller.
Fighting for a cure
Proceeds from this event will help promote further breast cancer research, as well as provide attendees with more information about breast cancer.
“1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 1 in 100 men. But by educating people on their risk, and making sure they are aware of what to look for and preventative measures, we can lower that risk,” said Welch.
