Students are several weeks into the semester, and organizations on campus are hosting bigger and better events with each passing week in an attempt to draw more students into membership.

One such organization is Drury’s History Club. The club focuses on bringing students together to talk and learn about history, and it is starting off the semester in a big way.

History is for everybody

Morgan Lamkin, History Club treasurer, stated at the beginning of the year, the club “had a welcome back party where we hosted a raffle. We got some books from Barnes and Noble and even got the Hamilton mixtape, and we raffled those off.”

The party also included “Otts Pasta which was very tasty. We had a pretty good attendance and it was a good time,” she stated.

“History Club is designed to give people an outlet to express their interests in history and share their own thoughts and ideas,” said Dakota Bowen, president of the History Club.

“The club is designed where you don’t have to be a history major or minor, but you just need to have an interest in history. We’ve always been a smaller club but we’re looking to grow and recruit, and we’re hoping to make it more of a presence on campus,” he continued.

The many events of the History Club

One way that the organization plans to increase student interest is through a trip to Silver Dollar City on Oct. 6.

“The Silver Dollar City trip [is] really aimed at recruitment,” said Bowen. “We want to try and use this to start an annual trip. We’ll be hearing a lot about the pseudo history that the park presents, as well as checking out all of the rides throughout the day.”

The trip to Silver Dollar City is just one event in a large roster that the History Club has planned for the fall semester.

“During the semester we’re going to try and have a Cocoa and Cram,” explained Lamkin. “We reserve a room and then people can come and ‘do homework,’ and talk and drink cocoa.”

This year, Cocoa and Cram is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4.

“We’re also planning on having a movie night in just a few weeks,” added Bowen. “Currently, we have a movie night planned for Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. in the Lay Hall auditorium but depending on what happens it could be subject to change.”

Lamkin also expressed that she was excited for upcoming events in the club’s future.

“I do want us to take a trip to the history museum on the square, because personally I’ve never been,” she said. “And in November there’s going to be a speaker for the history, philosophy and religion departments coming to campus, and we’ll have a lunch with them.”

Get in touch

“We have a History Club Facebook page that we post all of our new events and information regarding the club on there,” said Bowen. “You can also send us messages on the page and the officers will respond to you. We also have posters up all over campus with information on them, so come to our events and check out the club!”
