Drury student to host Voter Registration Bake-Off
Campus News, Community, Lifestyle September 28, 2018, Comments Off 171Drury’s Community Outreach & Leadership Development, College Republicans and Young Democrats are sponsoring a Voter Registration Bake-Off this Sunday, Sept. 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Findlay Student Center (FSC) ballroom.
Cameron Higbe, a Drury senior, organized this event as his senior seminar project for his major in strategic communication. Higbe encourages all students, faculty and community members to attend.
“This event is a fun opportunity for students and members of the community to ensure they are registered to vote for the midterm elections this November while also enjoying free dessert and getting familiar with groups both on campus and in the local community,” said Higbe.
The bake-off is an approachable way for people to get involved in the voting process, which many might find intimidating.
“Voter participation is a continuous battle across our nation, and making sure people are registered to vote is the first step towards a healthy democracy. There can be confusion with the process, so an event like this helps to clear up any questions or uncertainty about registering and voting,” said Higbe.
The only requirements in order to register at the bake-off are a photo ID and social security number.
Higbe will be able to register students to vote in any Missouri county. For students from out of state, he has information cards to show them how to register.
The event will also help students become more informed about their vote. Higbe stated, “The local Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian parties and the League of Women Voters will be in attendance with voting information and campaign representatives.”
Even if you are registered, Higbe still encourages you to stop by the event in the spirit of democracy, food and prizes.
“Come for the free dessert! There will be entries from locals, students and student organizations as well as sweet donations from businesses. Each visitor will get to vote for their favorite dessert entry and winners will receive a number of prizes.”
