Drury University’s volleyball season has just begun but that does not mean the season is at a slow start. On Sept. 17, the Panthers climbed to No. 14 in the national ranking. This progress is something to be recognized, and no one is more excited about this achievement than head coach Jenifer Bahner.
“I am very proud of the tone that our team has set thus far. We are playing with a sense of urgency I haven’t seen from our team in the past. I believe that urgency is being driven by our senior class. It has been awesome to see them mature into the teammates and leaders they are becoming,” said Bahner.
While being ranked No. 14 is a huge accomplishment, Bentley Mara, one senior captain and right side/outside hitter, is aiming even higher.
“This was all well-deserved…and I think I speak for the rest of my team when I say that we aren’t satisfied. No. 14 is great and all, but No. 1 sounds even better,” said Mara.
Drury’s first National Player of the Week
On Sept. 9, the Panthers reached another milestone. Emmalee Chrest, senior outside hitter, was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s National Player of the Week in NCAA-II.
“I was shocked to find out that I was the first player in Drury volleyball history to be named the AVCA National Player of the Week. I have my teammates and coaches to thank for this award because, without them, I wouldn’t be the player that I am today. They are constantly pushing me in practice every day to become a better player and teammate. It’s sad knowing that my volleyball career will be ending soon, but I’m using that as motivation to play every game like it’s my last,” said Chrest.
Looking towards the future
While the team still has a lot of the season left to play, Coach Bahner is confident in the girls’ abilities and appreciates their drive for success.
“I don’t believe in perfection in sports, but what I do expect from our team is continuous improvement. We have some tough matches ahead, but I truly believe we will continue to compete at a high level and give this school and community something to be proud of,” said Bahner.
The team continues to excel, only proving that they truly are a force to be reckoned with.
