Greek Week: A week of fun competition for Drury Greek Life
Campus News April 27, 2018, Comments Off 422Greek Week 2018 has finally arrived, and this year’s theme is “Through the Decades.”
This fun-filled week of events is an annual tradition sponsored by Drury’s Greek Life. It is a time for all of Drury’s Greek organizations to come together and face off in friendly challenges.
Though Greek Week takes place over just one week, planning has extended far beyond that timeframe. The preliminary meeting for Greek Week took place earlier this month, and team pairings were announced and events discussed. Each fraternity was paired with a sorority to represent a specific decade from the ‘60s to the ‘90s.
Sigma Nu and Kappa Delta represent the ‘60s, Kappa Alpha and Zeta Tau Alpha represent the ‘70s, Lambda Chi Alpha and Pi Beta Phi represent the ‘80s, and Sigma Pi and Delta Delta Delta represent the ‘90s.
The week was intended to kick off with several outdoor activities on Sunday, April 22. Greek Life had planned a fun field day full of activities on the Kellogg Greenspace, like potato sack races, a tug of war, and an egg toss. Sadly, the event had to be canceled due to rainy weather.
Instead, Greek Week really began on Monday, April 23, in the Findlay Student Center ballroom. The teams competed in a trivia night competition. They answered questions ranging in topics from music, Drury University and Greek Life knowledge, Netflix and sports. Tuesday was also the deadline for the banner competition, in which teams designed their own banners themed around their assigned decade. Banners were then judged by a panel of Drury University faculty and staff on their effective incorporation of their decade, creativity, appearance, originality and representation of the two organizations.
One of the most widely anticipated events took place on Tuesday, April 24: the canned food sculpture building contest. The teams used canned food items they had collected from donations to build their most creative structure at the Quad. All creations had to be at least four feet high, and could only be made from the items the teams had collected and donated within the previous week.
Wednesday, April 25 was completely dedicated to the volleyball tournament in Mabee and Weiser Gyms, where teams were able to put their skills (or lack thereof) to test on the court in head-to-head matchups.
To finish out Greek Week, on Thursday, April 26, the talent show took place in the FSC ballroom. A panel of Drury University faculty and staff was blown away by the impressive performances put on by the competing teams. There were absolutely no limits or restrictions on the theme or content of the performances, so audiences were treated to a wide variety of impressive performances by all of the competing team members.
As this year’s Greek Week came to a close, every member of Drury’s Greek organizations was reminded of the camaraderie and friendship they have gained through their participation in Greek Life. They were able to celebrate their participation in Greek Life with fun and games while also giving back to the community through donations.
