Young Democrats bring a sweet 4/20 to Drury while increasing student involvement in politics
Campus News April 20, 2018, Comments Off 76Free dessert and conspicuous drug references? That’s what is in store for students at the Drury Young Democrats ‘Baked’ Sale this Friday, April 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. outside Olin Library. Students attending will find that the Baked Sale is an engaging opportunity to swing past on their way to class or the Commons. At the sale, there will be voter registration, opportunities to donate to Democratic campaigns and free brownies. It is less of a bake sale and more of an awareness event, but the timely pun takes advantage of the calendar date.
The brownies are completely legal (or so they promise)!
Junior Oliver Huestis expressed his interest in the event. Huestis is a political science major and takes note of the larger issue that underpins 4/20 festivities like the Baked Sale.
“I think the bake sale is a great event that bring the community together and allows for the important topic of marijuana legalization to be brought up in a comfortable setting. It’s great fun and allows for some insightful dialogue about the issues regarding the war on drugs and current mass incarceration that is going on in the United States” said Huestis.
Drury Young Democrats is trying to bring politics to Drury in a fun and unintimidating way. Politics does not have to be stuffy and all business, especially at our age. Events that spawn political discussion can be fun as well as informative. This is the line that Young Democrats is riding with their Baked Sale. By centering the event around marijuana, they are gaining student attention, bringing awareness and increasing political activity.
Junior Sarah Buxton is a part of Drury College Republicans and she know that student engagement is crucial in politics. Previously a student at OTC, Buxton shared what she thought about the event from this standpoint.
“Something I love about Drury students is the creative events they come up with. This one is no exception. It’s great to see students engaging in the political arena and raising money for causes they believe in. While I may not be a Democrat, I do believe organizing events like this on campus to get people excited is important, regardless of party affiliation” said Buxton.
The Young Democrats Baked Sale is a creative way to get attention in order to engage the student body. Democrat, Republican, or somewhere in the middle, this event is for everybody, regardless of party orientation. Students should not feel uncomfortable in walking up, taking a brownie, and registering to vote this Friday. Even if you are already registered, stop by the table and pick up a brownie to celebrate your civic activity, Young Democrats appreciates it.
Donations will also be accepted during the Baked Sale. Although not required, they are appreciated as donations will be going to help local Democratic campaigns. Look for the Young Democrats outside the library this Friday. Pick up a free brownie and it will the most politically-oriented 4/20 you’ve ever had.
