At this point in the semester, most Drury students are burnt out on everyday school activities and are desperately searching for motivation. Luck is on our side because the residents of the Humanities House have planned another great event for free! Find your inspiration at the Humanities House Open Mic Night on Monday, April 23^rd, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Humanities Society president and house resident Morgan Lamkin explains what the event is all about.

“An open mic night is an event where you can come and recite your favorite poetry, or something you wrote, you can do your favorite song or a song that you wrote. We also provide musical instruments – we have a ukulele and guitar, and the Humanities House came with a piano and sheet music, too,” said Lamkin.

Performing not your thing? No problem! Students and faculty alike are encouraged to come sit and listen and take time off from stressing out over upcoming finals.

The open mic night will be an informal gathering celebrating the diversity of the humanities program. The house residents are excited to see what everyone has to offer.

“The open mic night has been an on again off again tradition in the Humanities House for a long time. It’s an opportunity for people who love the arts and human experience to gather in a shared space and just be around some good vibes,” said senior resident Mady McColm.

The students who live in the Humanities House are automatically placed in the council for the Humanities Society. Lamkin values this aspect of the program.

“Our job when we live here is to make events, ideally once a month. Our past few events have been the cookie decorating, and during Halloween, we had a party and painted pumpkins. This one is more humanities oriented than past events because of the poetry and the readings. This might be the most humanities event that we’ve done this year. I’m really looking forward to it because people can come in and tell jokes, really anything goes as long as it’s appropriate!” explained Lamkin.

While students are free to sit, listen and relax, it is the performances that really make an open mic worth attending.

“There’s no pressure to share anything but the opportunity to share anything you want in a safe environment,” explained McColm. “For myself, I’ll be sharing some poetry I’ve written and playing some hip ukulele covers. Feel free to come even if you’re not in the humanities! The beauty is that we’re all human.”

“I highly encourage people to come to perform because that’s what the event is for!” said Lamkin.

The historic Humanities House is located at 517 E Calhoun Street. Furnished entirely with antique furniture, mood lighting, and complete with a library, it is the perfect place to listen to fellow Drury community members recite or play original works. Stop by on Monday, April 23 and enjoy yourself. You deserve some down time.
