Drury University alerts students to armed intruder near campus
Campus News January 19, 2018, Comments Off 308At approximately 4:30 a.m., Drury sent out an alert to students. The message read, “Drury Alert: ARMED INTRUDER REPORTED AT 1400 East Clay. Shelter in Place! Go to www.drury.edu for updates.”
Drury then corrected the address to 1400 North Clay (northeast of campus) and stated they will notify the public as events transpire. Approximately 20 minutes later, the university sent one final notification letting students know it was “all clear” and that SPD felt there was no longer a threat to campus.
“We were informed the suspect was not in custody,” said Mike Brothers, media relations director at Drury. “Given the proximity to campus, our security and communications teams decided to issue an alert to campus asking people to shelter in place until we knew more from SPD. Shortly thereafter we did receive an advisory from SPD that they felt there was no danger to the campus or surrounding neighborhood and our team issued the All Clear alert via our system.”
According to KY3, a man was shot outside his home and suffered life-threatening injuries. One person was taken away in handcuffs by police, but was not a suspect in the shooting.
It was reported to security that several people did not receive the emergency notification texts. Drury Security sent an email to all faculty and staff stating that they are working on troubleshooting the problem.
